Well, sort of...
In case you haven’t noticed, fans of the In-N-Out burger chain tend to be, well, a little passionate.
Gordan Ramsay once said he “sat in [an In-N-Out] restaurant, had my double cheeseburger, then minutes later … drove back round and got the same thing again to take away.” French Laundry chef Thomas Keller once served In-N-Out at one of the Napa restaurant’s anniversary parties.
Cookbook author Julia Child sent her assistant out for In-N-Out while she herself was in hospital. Tom Hanks had the burgers delivered to cast and crew on the set of The Green Mile. Anthony Bourdain has called In-N-Out “the best restaurant in Los Angeles” and has claimed that when he posts a picture of “an anonymous [In-N-Out] burger on Instagram “I’ll get something like 50,000 likes in nine minutes.”
The passion of Australian fans is similarly unbound. Indeed, when an In-N-Out pop-up appeared in Sydney back in January, everything sold out before the thing had even opened.
That passion is about to be unleased again with the announcement that In-N-Out is soon to be available at the Sir John Young Hotel in Sydney’s CBD.
Well, sort of, anyway.
Burger event group (yes, such a thing exists) Hashtag Burgers will next week launch Down-N-Out, an month-long homage to the California-based chain—which famously refuses to franchise its operations, go public, use frozen food or pay its staff anything less than a fair wage—as part of the Sir John Young’s renovations.
This follows Down-N-Out’s first, wildly popular incarnation—which itself followed the success of the In-N-Out pop-up—which ran for one day and saw 500 burgers sold in two hours.
Former Mr Crackles chef Sebastien Cens will be churning out takes on In-N-Out’s popular “animal” and “protein” styles—the former a mustard-braised patty with caramelised onion and extra sauce and the latter a low-carb option with lettuce where the bun should be—as well as a vegetarian option. Hashtag is partnering with Murray’s Craft Brewing Co. for the pop-up.
The group is quick to point out that it is not affiliated with In-N-Out in any way. Rather, according to the group’s Facebook page, “we are just a bunch of cheeky b#stards”.
The Down-N-Out burger pop-up launches at Sir John Young Hotel on June 8.
