We reckon he had it coming. Also: more burgers for Sydney!
Remember the time in 2015 we all got really angry at American chef David Chang for being a dick about our burgers?
Allow us to remind you:
“You know who f**ks up burgers more than anyone else in the world? Australians. Australia has no idea what a burger is,” he wrote in Lucky Peach.
He went on to elaborate.
“They put a fried egg on their burger. They put canned beetroot on it, like a wedge of it. I am not joking you. This is how they eat their burger.”
It didn’t go down well with local media, at all. Even our senior editor Matt Preston decided to get involved.

Yesterday, Sydney Airport announced major changes to their international Terminal 1 food offerings, including a Bistro by Wolfgang Puck to open in the first half of 2016, and a Kitchen by Mike, to open in the second half.
Shannon Bennett will also debut his first Benny Burger store. The signature menu item? A beetroot and fried egg loaded Blackmore wagyu beef burger, fittingly named “The Chang”.
“Australians love a good story: yarn-spinning is central to our history, our community and our cultural identity. At Benny Burger, every aspect of our operation has a tale to tell: our organic produce, sustainable practices, uniforms and packaging, even the materials used to construct the store, all have stories that combine to create not just an amazing burger, but an experience to feel good about,” Bennett said via a press release.
“The ideas behind Benny Burger embrace the Australian way of life; a love of good times, grabbing a bite, sharing a few laughs, and knowing you are supporting sustainable practices and local producers. Benny Burger is all about feeling good, from the first to the last bite.”
Chang will be back in Australia soon, for the MADSyd, and he’s probably going to have to walk through the dining precinct once he arrives. Maybe we’ll witness some Chang-on-Chang action.
