Ballarat is having another Eureka moment, this time on the food and drink front. Image by Rob Leeson.

Mitchell Harris Wine Bar, in an old brick and bluestone building, joins a growing throng of progressive eateries in the heart of the gold rush city. And thanks to the vision of winemaker John Harris, the awesome cellar here – a portal to the wines of central and western Victoria – is matched by hugely appealing food suited to bar snacking and leisurely dining.

Our visit saw punters grazing on impeccably prepared terrines and charcuterie; golden potato pizzas ornamented with asparagus; and the best Peking Duck bao you’ll find outside of Melbourne.

Best of all was the seriously sticky twice-cooked pork belly with chilli caramel sauce. To go with that? It’s got to be a glass of the 2016 Mitchell Harris shiraz.
