Heroes, Melbourne review: sing for supper

With an appealing menu of South-East Asian hawker hits, a fanciful fit-out, a massive rooftop terrace bar and karaoke to boot, this new party palace is well on song.

There’s so much to like about Heroes, the new three-level party palace in the CBD from the Fancy Hank’s crew.

Making your entrance via elevator – especially when it’s hidden at the back of a gelato shop – is one.

The massive rooftop terrace is another. Seeing the city in another light from a new site is one of the unique pleasures of drinking in the CBD, and this is a great addition to the genre. Even in winter. There’s a good-looking range of beers up here by the pint and bottle, and cool cocktails are shaken with easy class.

And downstairs the dining room is such a riot of pinks and reds and filled with so many kitsch flea-market finds it’s like an episode of Antiques Roadshow  hosted by RuPaul and set in Patpong.

Chef Alicia Cheong – fresh from a stint cooking at Singapore’s Restaurant André – has fired up the barbie to turn out South-East Asian street food, with skewers featuring heavily. Tender chewy chicken bits come under a sweet-leaning satay, and lamb comes with a hit of tingling Sichuan heat, while the adventurous will be rewarded with surprisingly delicious duck hearts brushed with teriyaki and wrapped in garlic chives.

Smoked brisket from Hank’s turns up in a cracking dish of salty, smoky Sichuan numbness that’s the best friend to a beer, while the brilliant sweet-spicy achar pickle of carrot and pineapple counters the richness of thinly sliced smoked tongue drizzled with chilli oil. A large thick fillet of snapper, meanwhile, seems out of place among the rest of the finger food offering, but fat, juicy and smoky jointed chicken wings are marvellously messy and moreish.

Oh, and did someone say karaoke? Yep, there’s so much to like. We can be Heroes, but for more than one night.
