Cafe Mondello, Launceston: we love the cheeky sweet treats

easter picnic

You had us at all-day brekky.

Mondello sits at the top of town but unassumingly serves up sensational food and espresso. Its relatively brief menu runs all day, so you’re welcome to perfectly cooked eggs on toast for lunch.

It’s only small, but that’s its beauty. Squeeze in to a booth seat and watch the world hurry by through big windows. A mirrored wall cleverly creates the idea of space and reflects vintage Italian posters and people of all ages, there for a hearty feed or cheeky sweet treat.

On one of Launceston’s busiest streets, there are plenty of locals calling in for their morning takeaway. If you’ve been there more than once, chances are the splendid wait staff will know how you take your coffee.

The beans are deliciously well-seasoned and smashed avocado on toast with dukkha and poached eggs, bellissimo!

On the beaches of Mondello in Sicily, you compete for a patch of sand and pay 20 euro for a deckchair. While price tags may vary and you’re not surrounded by tanning tourists and coconut hawkers, the similar popularity of this Mondello means getting a seat can be tricky. If you can’t get one, cross the road to the burger shop or wander two blocks down to a well-known vegetarian café or sandwich shop.
