Kate Gibbs hits coffee mecca Marrickville and finds a gem.
Trend hunters, relax. You can stop your interminable traipsing around Sydney looking for waffles and fried chicken and pork bulgogi rolls, decadent milkshakes topped with even more decadent things, because it’s all here in one hot little spot in Marrickville.
I’m hovering over one dish with my smart phone, pulling my stomach in so it doesn’t peek in shot, realising I’ve hit the Instagram jackpot of foods that everyone “likes”. A large green, healthy bowl of broad beans, snap peas, avocado, wilted green and chervil ticks the breakfast bowl and health trends in one, and the wobbling 65 degree egg on top (62 degrees is more in vogue actually but we’ll let that slide) is a self-saucing winner.
Owner George and Destiny Choutis have poured themselves into the design of the large warehouse-style room. There are crosshatch timber tables made by Choutis himself (patrons ask for custom versions all the time). A long emerald-tile clad cabinet brims with cakes by pastry talent Libby Marriner. The La Marozzo coffee machine works hard most of the morning, churning out painstaking drops of Roastville’s own coffee, which is roasted in-house.
There’s a Reuben sandwich (tick), and a beef burger involving grass fed cow, plus the slow-cook movement has a win with the excellent 12-hour braised beef cheeks with celeriac puree. There really are waffles with fried chicken, and they’re crunchy, soft, salty; a must for epicureans with their finger on the pulse, and for those of us who just like good food.
