14. Wasabi, Noosa Sound

Wasabi

All produce is sourced as near to the venue as possible.

Dining at sunset is usually somewhat unfashionable, but at this Japanese multi-course-only restaurant cantilevered over the Noosa River it’s utterly bewitching. The rectangular dining space with relaxed banquette seating and a near-authentic tatami room glows in stunning shades of amber and rose as the sun comes down, resulting in effortless romance, as well as making it much more bearable than in the heat at lunch time.

The restaurant’s ethos channels the Japanese tradition of eateries only using local ingredients, and therefore all produce is sourced as near to the venue as possible and, most notably, from their own farm, Honeysuckle Hill.

The result is the choice of a four-course a la carte, or a seven or nine-course omakase menu boasting the Sunshine Coast’s freshest fare treated with the boldest of Japanese flavours. Take, for instance, arrowhead squid stuffed with Mooloolaba king prawn, charry from a hit on the bincho-tan and zingy with a persimmon and ginger dressing. Or perhaps meltingly tender venison in a dashi broth with pickled radish, which could lose the oily carrot chips.

A series of complimentary snacks leave little room for dessert, though sweet tooths will be sated with the likes of shochu-macerated figs with strawberry granita, soba custard and soba crumb that holds back on the sugar. Professional and polished staff keep the show running, while the worldly drinks list – dominated by a cracking range of sake and stellar Japanese whisky – will ensure you want to leave the car at home.
