Buzzing cafe by day, heralded restaurant by night. Three Blue Ducks head chef Lauren McKenna serves ethically produced and authentic food on the doorstep of one of Sydney’s iconic beaches. This is the real deal. Wander down the muralled hall, the main artery that runs straight through the cafe, and you’ll discover a kitchen garden with herbs and chickens.

With six owners, including Darren Robertson and Marl LaBrooy (both ex-Tetsuya’s). the brand has expanded into Rosebery, Byron Bay – and more recently Brisbane. Together they’ve cultivated a loyal foodie following for their honest, wholesome menu that celebrates a fusion of flavours that draws inspiration from Asia, Mexico and beyond. There is a major chill factor here. So grab a sunny table and order a lychee mimosa while you peruse the menu.

Rejoice, they do an all-day breakfast! The corn fritters are a standout, crispy and fluffy on the inside, not the unpleasant oil trap that fritters tend to be, as any serial brunch crawler would appreciate. Served with guacamole, fermented cabbage, jalapeno, herb salad, labneh and poached eggs, they’re a finely balanced option. The silky spanner crab scramble is one for all you sriracha lovers out there and here, the sauce is homemade.

They also do a classic, juicy fuss-free cheeseburger with a buttermilk bun, exactly how a burger should be. From cocktails to beer and a modest wine offering, there’s sure to be a drink pairing for you.

Ask about their daily bakery selection. The muffins are moreish and perfect with a dose of rich Single O brew. And if you find yourself devouring a date, banana and honeycomb muffin one day, make sure you order the chewy choc and walnut brownie the next. Either way, you’ll be impressed.
