This Spanish tapas bar at The Barracks serves up a little grunge and a lot of cool.

With its graffiti-lined walls and ceiling, barely there moody lighting and rustic industrial finishes, this Spanish tapas bar at The Barracks serves up a little grunge and a lot of cool.

Its laid-back vibes and accessible, understated menu may cement it solidly in the realm of casual dining; but it’s quality produce, expert cookery and attention to detail on the floor sees Peasant punch well above its weight.

Sassy waitstaff deliver clever quips and expert knowledge in equal measure, helping diners navigate the diverse array of dishes, which run from classics like patatas bravas to more hearty fare such as seafood zarzuela.

Any aversion to anchovies should be put aside for the croquetas de boquerones – their crisp, tanned breadcrumb shell giving way to marshmallow-like fish-spiked potato; while Spanish sardines served simply with bread, butter, salt and lemon juice are the best of Barcelona vacations on a plate.

Don’t waste time with basic desserts, instead keep to savoury plates such as standout beef cheeks, collapsing at the touch of a fork on silky celeriac and cauliflower puree, with an intense pedro ximinez reduction and scattering of wafer-thin, sweet potato crisps.

The all-Spanish wine list is the perfect complement to the food, while the signature Mediterranean-themed cocktail offering is all about fun.

Whether it’s an intimate date night, raucous catch-up with friends, or something in between, Peasant delivers.
