What the Blue Mountains lacks in culinary institutions it certainly makes up for in natural landmarks. But the outer Sydney district is proving that a budding foodie scene is on the horizon with the emergence of venues like Mesa Barrio. The casual nook comes courtesy of Will Cowan-Lunn, a former head chef at Rockpool Bar and Grill Melbourne who has brought his ample skill to his new Catalonian-inspired venture in small town Lawson. The menu is a surprisingly affordable foray throughout the Mediterranean, served in a sleek, simple interior.

Arriving for lunch, short and sweet seems to be the mantra for both nibbles and tipples alike. Smaller plates are the specialty, though sharing of all sizes is evidently a key component to Mesa Barrio’s philosophy. With fare crafted from local produce, it’s a sophisticated offering compared to what you may normally find mountain-side. Partnered with soft flatbread, the whipped cod roe with fried crackers is a moreish introduction, best followed by the chargrilled chicken souvlaki or a hearty fried chicken burger. The tart of the day is well worth a bite and proves the venue is invested in seasonality, with fruit like fig and Logan Brae apples taking centrestage. The wine list is similarly petite, but with an ever-evolving list that maintains an Australian focus.

Service at Mesa Barrio is unfortunately lacking; so relaxed that you feel ignored. But despite this downfall, the venue remains a strong addition to the Blue Mountains’ dining scene.
