88. Alpha, Sydney

Alpha took advantage of the long break over lockdown to have a makeover. The result, a stunning new fit-out that makes the space feel like an ancient Greek island home.

Open-kitchen vibes make you feel like you’re part of the family, with the aroma of spit-roasted lamb cooked over charcoal for eight hours luring you in. Chef Peter Conistis sticks to his roots, delivering a modern take on traditional Greek food. Take, for example, a moussaka featuring seared scallops and taramasalata – Yiayia would not approve, but we do.

Dishes are designed to share, so bring a big group of friends and go for a la carte, or choose from one of the excellent-value share menus. The wine list explores all parts of Greece with drops including an Alpha Estate Xinomavro, a full-bodied red, or get right into those Greek-island vibes and sip on ouzo and tsipouro.

All good meals must come to an end, and topping the night off with a Galaktoboureko, Greek coffee, medjool dates and halva is a must. With a buzzing atmosphere, warm service and spot-on food, Alpha is still at the top of its game.
