Sibling to suburban hero Barzaari Marrickville, the eastern Mediterranean inspired Barzaari Chippendale rocked into the former shell of Chippendale’s Kensington Street Social with a casual confidence and mantra to make you feel at home. And they’ve nailed it. Eat at high tables, at the bar, at the kitchen counter or the mezzanine private dining above, whatever you do, just get in there and eat.
The drawcard is the alluring share plate menu of chef Darryl Martin. His vibrant food draws from the spice trail of Egypt, Syria, Cyprus, Lebanon and surrounds. Smooth, rich Tarama (whipped cod roe) partners pickles and puffed rice chips. Raw kingfish sashimi shines next to fresh peas drizzled in lemon jam, while an aerated buttermilk tarama and shaved air dried lountza (cured pork) adds depth to lightly battered southern calamari.

Chickpeas get a sweet earthy ride with beetroot tahini while slow-cooked beef short rib served simply with chermoula and hummus is a showstopper.
There’s nothing fancy about Barzaari Chippendale, but that’s why we love it. Good service, quality cocktails and wines, and food you wish you could eat every day.
Must Eat Dish: Lamb shoulder, harissa, yoghurt tahini
