58. Bellota, South Melbourne

Bellota lives in a quaint double-storey South Melbourne terrace, serving creature comforts with creative flair.

Nicky Riemer has helmed Prince Wine Store’s restaurant project, which opened next door to the suburban bottle shop in 2013. Wine-friendly eats and gluggable pours are enjoyed in equal pleasure, with vino available by the glass, carafe or bottle from next door for a small corkage fee. Staff make it their mission to find the perfect food and wine pairing.

Build a meal out of a broad selection of charcuterie and cheese, which are supplied weekly by Savour and Grace and Maker & Monger. Vibrant peppers add brightness to the burrata gremolata, as well as the more substantial Tuscan goat abbacchio. Here, the meat and peppers arrive on a bed of creamy polenta swirling with robust juices.

Don’t worry, vegetarians and vegans are well catered for, too. The wine bar has a lot to offer locals, visitors and everyone in between with its rustic and homely European eats.
