Review: A neon-lit K-BBQ spot has landed in Edmondson Park, and it's going off

Have a blast at BOM, a Korean barbecue and soju bar in Sydney’s south-west.

BOM, which stands for BaaOinkMoo, has just opened its doors in Edmondson Park. Located next to iPlay in the new Ed. Square Shopping Centre, it’s difficult to tell where the amusement centre ends and the barbecue house begins. From the outside, this could just as easily be a TimeZone, with splashy neon lights and pop music emanating from within. But it’s the scent of seared meats that gives the game away.

Sure enough, competing with the coloured disco lights are dancing flames rising from the circular burners that are built into every table.

BOM executive chef Peter Wu has sourced a wide selection of premium meats for the BBQ menu. While the baa is surprisingly absent, the oink and moo are well represented, plus there’s plenty of cluck too. Wagyu beef comes in all the traditional cuts, including short rib, ox tongue, oyster blade, chuck tail flap and more. Our wagyu skirt steak lacked the luscious marbling we were hoping for, but the pork neck does not disappoint. Thin strips of the marinated meat are thrown to the grill where they spit and sizzle, the sweet soy creating a caramelised crust. The bulgogi is yet another winner, the sesame garlic flavours enhanced by the smoky char of the grill.

Dial up the heat factor with a bowl of chilli buttered corn, which is aggressively red and intensely delicious, especially when stirred into the rice. The menu makes it easy for big groups, with a wagyu set menu as well as a dedicated banquet that includes all the farmyard friends.

Korean barbecue is nothing without good banchan, so be sure to hail down the roaming trolley stacked with small plates. Load up on the goodies – there’s the classic kimchi, which is perfectly hot and sour, as well as salty, spicy, fermented octopus paste, blanched green beans, and a cold soba noodle salad with crunchy vegetable strips.

The menu expands out from the DIY meats to include fried chicken eight different ways, including a sweet and spicy option, or dusted in snow cheese. There’s also sashimi platters and noodle soups – but don’t let it distract you from the flaming hot cauldron in front.

Booze is another important part of the barbecue experience, and the BOM drinks list goes beyond the usual wines and beers. A dedicated soju bar gets the party started with elaborate soju-spiked cocktails that taste of tropical punch. Go out guns blazing with the Gangnam hand grenade, a sweet, fruity mix of watermelon soju with tequila and lemon that’s served in a glass grenade.

Meanwhile, the bomarita cocktail is a spicy marg like you’ve never had before. In place of the jalapeños, kimchi adds a chilli kick. If you get a little carried away, you can always order the Korean pear juice, a local hangover cure that has been proven to lessen the after effects.

Embrace the party atmosphere with a post bulgogi-boogie. A dedicated dance floor, complete with glittering disco balls and a pumping K-pop soundtrack, is the perfect place to shake your bom bom.
