The lower River Murray township of Goolwa sits on a slow bend that spreads and turns its wide waterway towards the Coorong and Southern Ocean – all of which gives reason to the location, produce sourcing and menu direction of this exceptionally welcoming dining room and open kitchen run by the immensely hospitable Joel and Casey Cousins.

It’s a breakfast to mid-afternoon affair, inside and out with river views. Start the day with modern cafe dishes and fresh juices, go big on corned beef, poached eggs, sauerkraut and dill pickles, or embrace the lunch seafood highlights with the likes of lightly fried whitebait, Goolwa Pipis in a laksa-like sauce, panko prawns and fried Sichuan squid.

House signatures include bouillabaisse and excellent fish and chips featuring market and seasonal-dependent species like flathead and Coorong mullet. Land-based mains range from pork, lamb, beef and kangaroo across Asian and Mediterranean treatments. If the Bombora clam, prawn, pipi and fish chowder is on the specials board, order it immediately.

A dessert cabinet groans with genuine locally baked cakes and tarts and coffees are top rate. Table service is warm and smart, and the wine list offers many nearby regional choices from Langhorne Creek, Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. Bombora is as fulfilling as it is a real-deal regional delight.
