Fondly dubbed The Tratt, this family-friendly Bondi institution helmed by Two Fat Guys is a favourite, not only for its famous waterfront location, but for the vibrant and delicious Italian and Mediterranean-style fare it’s been serving for 32 years. Brown leather banquettes, dark wooden furnishings, gold trimmings and soothing splashes of cool mint give the restaurant a polished beach-shack vibe, while an outside terrace makes it the perfect spot to people-watch with a fun cocktail in hand. Its cruisy staff and down-to-earth atmosphere creates a relaxed setting for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Adventurous flavour combinations and generous helpings of antipasti kick off the afternoon menu – like perfectly golden battered zucchini flowers with feta and preserved lemon stuffing, corn salsa and white anchovy caper dressing. Mains focus on surf and turf – fish and chips, and steak charred and cooked to your liking served with fries and green peppercorn sauce. For a signature dish that does not disappoint, a big bowl of house-made spaghetti with blue swimmer crab, cuttlefish, green garlic and chilli is good old-fashioned, fork-twirling, slurping goodness. Pizzas are reasonably priced and made from a sourdough culture that’s two years old. It makes the base different to a Neapolitan-style, but prosciutto ribbons and mozzarella are plentiful. The drinks list is thoughtful, so there’s something for everyone.
