Continental Deli, Newtown, Sydney review (2016)

Continental-deli

French technique meets Mediterranean flavours at Continental Deli, Bar & Bistro, a drop-in deli with a great bistro menu.

Continental Deli, Bar & Bistro is a casual drop-in deli with a stellar bistro menu. The tiny two-storey terrace is the brainchild of Joe Valore, Elvis Abrahanowicz and Sarah Doyle.

In the kitchen chef Jesse Warkentin is cooking food using French technique and Mediterranean flavours. Start with a round of gildas — think olive, ortiz anchovy, guindilla on a toothpick — and a plate of mixed, tinned seafood treats. Grass-fed sirloin steak tartare is only mildly seasoned with Worcestershire and capers to ensure you enjoy the beef. Spoon it onto house-made mesh-gauzed gaufrette potato chips. The crepe cannelloni, which replaces pasta with crepe, is absolutely stunning, and the sharp, citrus joy of preserved cumquats counters a delightful chicken liver parfait.

Nothing ground-breaking, but a good, reliable local.
