61. Daughter in Law, Melbourne

Jessi Singh’s “unauthentic” Indian restaurant, Daughter in Law, is as colourful as the culture itself.

Plush peacock feather-blue booths fill the sherbet-pink dining room. Bollywood films beam on to a wall via a projector and pop music pumps overhead. It’s a vibrant and playful riot, with plenty of party-starting, street-food snacks on offer.

Start with the golgappa (semolina puffs) filled with yoghurt and chutney, or strap in and go with the value-for-money Feed Me menu. Indian fried chicken is coated in a hot blend of subcontinental secret spices and is incredibly juicy. The naan is best swiped in the array of multicoloured chutneys served on an impressive platter. Singh’s curries, including three vegan options, are spice-loaded while the butter chicken is sans butter or ghee (clarified butter). Grilled dishes and desserts await those with looser waistbands.

The cardamom and cinnamon kulfi (condensed-milk ice cream on a stick) is theatrically popped from its mould tableside, while the gulab jamun (Indian doughnuts) are scrumptious – syrupy and bouncy sweet. Cocktails and mocktails are aromatically spiced, laced with curry leaves and chilli. Daughter in law is for every Melburnian: you wear black, it brings the colour.
