5. Fico, Hobart

Fico, Hobart.

Chefs and owners Federica Andrisani and Oskar Rossi have combined their respective cultural backgrounds and years of experience in Michelin-starred restaurants around Europe to shape the unique, European-style bistro menu on offer at Fico.

Although Rossi was born in Hobart, his father emigrated from Czechoslovakia, which meant that he grew up eating game meats like pigeon, a direct link to the pigeon dish that remains a constant on the menu year-round (Rossi still supports the same pigeon producer that his father worked with). Meanwhile, the pasta and risotto dishes executed with utter perfection can be credited to Andrisani’s childhood spent in Naples. That said, the pair aren’t afraid of working with Asian flavours and their kingfish with soy and wasabi has become a mainstay.

The staff are knowledgeable and attentive, equipped to suggest a matching drop (there is a solid mix of local and European wines). With both bar seating and large communal tables, Fico is ideal for lone diners as well as small or large groups; it has a palpable convivial atmosphere that permeates the space.
