31. The Fish House, Burleigh heads

The Fish House

As the first restaurant to put Burleigh Heads on the culinary map six years ago, this Gold Coast beachside icon continues to make waves.

There are those stunning ocean views and sea breezes that whip through bifold windows into the classically decorated, light-filled space. The far-reaching, tome-like global wine list heavy with champagne for celebrations; and the always obliging and highly knowledgeable staff. Then there’s the signature seafood menu, built around a commitment to only using the best quality product from across the country – and sometimes over the ditch.

Entrees may include the nostalgic prawn cocktail with gem lettuce or baby calamari, unbeatably tender whether flash fried and dusted with fennel pollen or grilled with chilli tomato sambal; while mains are all served with complimentary sides of roasted potatoes, seasonal green veg and a simply dressed cos salad. Think thick and meaty New Zealand hapuka, steamed to retain moisture with ginger and shallots, or the unsurpassed whole baby snapper – the entire fish fried ’til crisp with a fiery nahm jim dressing and clean Thai herb salad for balance.

A daily changing array of other whole fish and seafood is also available to keep the menu as fresh as the restaurant’s vibe.

With desserts following classic lines like chocolate fondant and apple tarte tatin, The Fish House is a venue that begs for long, lazy lunches among friends and that sensational vista.
