Who said top-quality fare had to come with white tablecloths and silver cutlery?
Gone are the days when restaurants were simply bricks and mortar. Pop- ups, market stalls and food trucks have changed our perceptions of what it means to eat out. In short, it’s as much about social interaction as it is sustenance.
In fact, apparently all one needs now is a shipping container and a car park. Hello? Please!
What a confusing concept. But, major credit to these young guns – this enterprising eatery is a lot of fun and the Vietnamese-inspired grub is incredibly well executed.
Hello Please is the brainchild of Dan Ward (ex-The Stables) and Maris Cook (ex-Pearl Cafe) and it has the enthusiasm of youth pulsing through it. Energetic service, great tunes and a beer garden atmosphere, too.
Down the slender Fish Lane, and housed in an empty plot between buildings, it’s a sea of alfresco communal tables where you can swig 333s and slam a banh mi.
A former shipping container has been converted into a kitchen with a small awning attached to provide shelter for some diners, though most are left to the elements, meaning if it rains, you get wet. It’s more of a drop in for a bite, or bend-the-arm-with-a- brew kind of place than a formal restaurant as such, but the food is well worth the trip.
There’s the solid pork bao (bun) with crisp, wobbly pork belly, peanut hoisin and cucumber. Meanwhile, the fried chicken ribs benefit from a spicy, sharp green chilli soy.
Sriracha and mayo decorate smoky strips of charred eggplant, while their pho game (chicken or mushroom) is also strong, with a nice depth to the broth. Or try the beef, betel leaf and peanut dumplings.
As summer rolls in, I get the feeling this secret spice alley might be just the spot to get your fix with friends.
