86. Jimmy Wah's, Burleigh Heads review

Jimmy Wah's

Just like the streets of Vietnam that inspired the menu, the vibe at Jimmy Wah’s is boisterous, buzzy and spirited.

Diners talk over each other competing to be heard in the lively, mid-Century-influenced dining space, lined with pale timber furniture with avocado-hued stools and chairs, and eye-catching wall art. This is not a restaurant for intimate, romantic dinners, but for fun and lively nights out with friends sipping cocktails from the Asian-skewed list (try the tequila-based ‘Cassius in Peace’) while sharing plates described as “Vietnamese cuisine with a Modern Australian influence”.

Let the chef take the pressure out of ordering by choosing the seven-course “feed me” menu for just $59 with many of the dishes gluten free and dairy free; or bravely navigate the list of smaller and larger plates yourself. Select from the likes of Yellowfin tuna sashimi with a soy dressing, braised short rib steam buns, chicken and shitake dumplings, rice paper rolls; or the spiced quail with charred corn and coconut puree.

There’s also a tight but cleverly selected wine list – the majority of which is available by the glass.

While service can meander from the attentive and fastidious to the slightly slapdash when the restaurant reaches capacity, Jimmy Wah’s still delivers on a good night out.
