5. Lalla Rookh, Perth

Lalla Rookh, Perth

In the realms of CBD eating and drinking, Lalla Rookh has been consistently at the top of its game for years now. No easy feat.

Alexandra Haynes’s menu works across the cavernous venue from the main restaurant to the discrete Wine Store – our favoured spot. It’s versatile and down to earth, while being an inventive take on modern Italian. You’ll find house-made pasta, pizza that’s kicking goals and small plates that are perfect for grazing over while hitting one of the city’s best wine lists, overseen by sommelier Jeremy Prus.

While the original gaze for Lalla Rookh was northern Italian, Haynes has taken a wider view in her tenure, taking full advantage of WA’s seafood, from Shark Bay prawns to daily market fish options. Rabbit and veal, staples of a good Italian menu are cooked
with flair.

The il Capo, a six-course chef’s menu, is still the go-to – a lucky dip of dishes from the seasonal main menu, but also the odd off-book treat. Veal cotoletta, chargrilled ox tongue (hit with a ton of lemon), Fremantle octopus and indulgent cannoli are all dishes we hope to see when we roll the il Capo dice.
