While Barcelona may be intent on Catalan independence, we hope chef-owner Javier Codina has no idea of splitting with Australia.
The Spanish chef’s leafy CBD oasis seamlessly melds Brisbane and Barcelona, offering classic Catalan dishes and smart Euro-style service.
While the menu heralds Catalan classics, there’s an unwavering commitment to precise execution, take for example the creamiest of duck liver parfaits with a vibrant Pedro Ximenez jelly, or perhaps whole sardines, their intense fishiness balanced by a syrupy raspberry dressing. The Catalan seafood stew celebrates Queensland produce and is beyond generous in its portion, while meat lovers can choose from the likes of slow cooked lamb shoulder, wild hare, beef cheek or steak.
Desserts do not diverge from the classics either, think churros and crema Catalana – the caramel taken right to the edge of the custard creation, mellowing the sweetness of the dish, while heavily macerated strawberries provide contrast.
A smart blending of Old and New World wines from less familiar wineries –unsurprisingly favouring the Spanish – and a generous Cava line up, rounds out this trustworthy offering, that is thankfully, here to stay.
