Nudefish Poké, Bondi review: really delicious food

Nudefish Poké

In a cute Bondi alleyway, Nudefish Poké makes food with nothing to hide.

I have found the solution to feeling like a superhuman – well, as close as you can get.

Step one. Go for a refreshing swim in the surf at Bondi Beach.

Step two. Gently stretch your muscles on the golden sand under the sun.

Step three. Walk across the road to the newest eatery on the block for a nutritious lunch.

Follow the above and it will warrant a boasting phone call to your competitive friends.

Nudefish Poké opened its doors late last month after minor delays in the cute Beach House Lane to serve Bondi’s health-conscious community.

Wentworth Courier visited at the weekend and the venue lived up to everything promised by founders Tom Walton, of the famed Bucket List, and James Nathan.

“The concept takes inspiration from the sushi and sashimi bars of Japan to the hole in the wall poké shacks of Hawaii,” Walton said.

“Both cultures have similar philosophies, treating raw ingredients with the utmost respect, and creating some really delicious food, which is what we’re all about.

“It’s a simple model, our food is ‘nude’, there’s nothing to hide behind. Each ingredient is prepared with that in mind.”

The menu features six crafted poke bowls, heroing sashimi fish, masterstock poached chicken, and plenty of vegan plant-based options.

If you want something different, you can customise your own bowl.

On a busy Saturday, I grabbed a Green Goddess Salmon small bowl ($14) which came with shredded kale, radish, fresh herbs, snow pea sprouts and cashew coconut crunch.

I chose a base of brown rice but you can swap with rice noodle salad, cabbage and baby kale or kelp noodle salad.

For fish-lovers, it’s good to know the seafood is sourced straight from the fishermen, including Alpine salmon from Mt Cook in New Zealand, and Walkers Albacore Tuna from Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast.

If you don’t do “raw”, ask for “aburi” style blowtorching to lightly scorch the fish before mixing it with other ingredients.

For vegetarians, pick between a miso sesame eggplant bowl or a down-to-earth bowl with tofu, marinated mushrooms and tamari almonds.

There is something for everyone, including the kids. Some people have taken this advice literally and ordered bowls for their pet dogs.

“It’s very Bondi,” a not-so-surprised Walton said.

“They have chicken and rice; they pay full price for their dog.

“We’ve sold about 10 of them so far – it’s not on the menu but they ask for it.”

Walton said they had more surprises coming for Bondi, including a liquor license and finishing the inside fit-out to seat up to 30 people.

The creative chef is also thinking about fun events to fundraise for community causes.

Maybe a “nudie run” he suggested – for all those fit superhumans.
