Name something better than devouring a hot pie, in a cosy pub, on a cold day. We’ll wait.
Fitzroy North’s beloved The Recreation has been rewarding punters for five years, whatever the weather. The 1870s building keeps to its nostalgic Aussie roots with a veranda out the front and rockin’ pub fare out the back.
The dining room reveals exposed red brick, timber tables and cheery staff that will start pouring you a pint before your coat’s even off. Chef Steven Nelson’s seasonal cooking is refined and ever-changing – but you can rely on fish, chicken and steak to make regular appearances.
Back to that pie. It’s made with a flaky half-dome of puff pastry concealing a homely, robust rabbit stew, served on a bed of chunky carrots and chard. The impressive drinks list features wines from here and abroad, designed to pair nicely with the food.
In the cooler months, a set menu (for two or more people) may include similarly comforting dishes like dry-aged duck with all the trimmings. Like all good pubs, you’ll leave The Recreation feeling warm and satisfied, with the added bonus of tricked-up plates of food without a hint of fine dining stuffiness.
