92. Social Eating House + Bar, Broadbeach

A decade of keeping up appearances on the Gold Coast saw modern Australian stalwart Social check in for a nip-tuck earlier this year.

Reopening in April, the refreshed restaurant is now a match for executive chef Matt Jefferson’s fetching fare. Sunshine slanting through elegant brick archways lends warmth to a modernised dining room and bar, with bold accents including an emerald marble table in the private dining room.

The service and unhurried vibe is on the casual side, but expect food of a fine-dining standard. The makeover extends to an expanded refreshment list and made-to-share menu, where staples have been spliced with new dishes. Puffed sesame rice crackers piled with a silky combo of fish tartare, soy, ginger and wasabi are still the pick of the bar snacks, competing for attention with lamb empanadas drizzled with aioli and sherry caramel.

Lamb shoulder slow-cooked in yoghurt for 12 hours deserves its following, but carnivores should be equally enamoured with wagyu rump cap artfully accessorised with smoked celeriac, burnt onion and native pepper jus. It presents the perfect opportunity to order a big bowl of crispy chat potatoes on the side, served swimming in gruyere cream.

Social 2.0 is an exciting marriage of food and fit-out – it just needs front-of-house to share the enthusiasm.
