With a wine list that’s a cool-climate celebration of the hyper-local filled with loads of lovely sub-$50 bottles, and a menu that’s an equally proud showcase of the best of the region, Source Dining remains a jewel in Kyneton’s crown.
The newly carpeted dining room is now cosier than ever, the perfect backdrop for a meal that has all the generosity and flavour of the Victorian countryside, finessed with expert technique. There’s no better example than ‘this little pig went to market’ charcuterie plate, where a house-made pork pie sits alongside an excellent meaty, jelly-rich terrine, decadent headcheese rillettes and a fat slice of toasted brioche.
Care and attention abounds, from the house-made sourdough with olive oil emulsified butter on the tables, to a warming potato and leek soup that follows as a complimentary opener, and blackberry jubes that sweeten the bill.
A goat’s cheese souffle served with local walnuts is a big old hug from your grandma, while Rockwood Cottage lamb with pancetta peas and mash is decadence writ in delicious.
Despite the comfort factor, the menu still achieves elegance, best seen in a dessert line up of amaro sponge with rosemary ice cream and chewy pistachio dacquiose with fromage frais cheesecake and bay leaf ice cream.
With owners Tim Foster’s focus on sourcing local, Source proves to be an artful depiction of country Victoria on a plate.
