As a well-established Chinese restaurant that sticks to its roots, Spice Temple takes its inspiration from regional China. More specifically, the lesser-known cuisines of Yunnan, Jiangxi, Hunan, Sichuan, Guangxi and Xingjiang.
Entering the building via the dimly lit stairs is a mysterious experience, but you’re quickly seated in what transpires to be a buzzing restaurant. The menu screams spice, with selected dishes highlighted in red to warn that they’re likely to make you sweat. The offerings are designed to be shared, with more than 50 dishes to satisfy hungry customers.
The signature kung pao chicken is a must, with Sichuan peppercorns, chillies and cashews. Your tastebuds will be on fire but, trust us, it’s totally worth it. Excellent choices include the wheel of fortune prawn toast with Spice Temple sweet-and-sour sauce, along with hand-cut egg noodles and XO bacon.
With a menu of this size, including some not-so-cheap temptations, getting a big group together is the ideal way to sample as much as possible. There are two set banquets: Golden and Premium. The wine list is equally impressive, stretching to exactly 100 Australian and imported drops. Don’t leave without trying the three-milk cake with dried raspberries, pistachio and almond.
