St Hugo, Rowland Flat review: the finest in the region

St Hugo
St Hugo

A year on from opening and St Hugo’s elite tasting room and restaurant has grown into one of the finest regional dining experiences in the state.

The wine side of this beautifully restored, historic Barossa building is dedicated to the St Hugo fine SA wine portfolio, including exclusive private cellar tasting and dining rooms served by an extraordinary kitchen team led by one of the Barossa’s most creative and technique-savvy cooking minds.

Here, the dishes are built intricately around taste and textural matches to the wines, and served in four-and-eight-course tasting menus. Take the opportunity to perch at the kitchen bench for a more intimate chef’s commentary though the enlightenment in this menu translates to the modern dining room just as well.

Subtly smoked kingfish with oyster cream is inspired, while a sophisticated version of a Barossa traditional smallgood “Jagerbraten” cannot be bypassed. Beetroot and ricotta gnocchi with whey butter sauce is a joy, and seared wagyu with grilled lettuce lifts the bistro roof sky high. Top class.
