Cherry-red banquettes and curved-back chairs wait to hug diners through long lunches and stretching suppers at this elegant yet approachable Italian favourite.
From chef/owner Tony Percuoco, who can be seen wandering the floors and checking in on guests, Tartufo is about European hospitality at its best. Staff are well-drilled on the menu and wine list – a keenly priced, Italian-leaning compendium where glasses start at just $9 and bottles top out at $1000 – making guests feel immediately welcome.
The menu showcases the food of Percuoco’s home town of Naples, meaning terrific red and white-based pizzas fly out of the wood-fired oven with the dough taken to bubbly, charred brilliance under classic toppings of top-notch ingredients.
The rest of the menu covers classic appetisers, entrees, mains and desserts, all built around the freshest ingredients of the season treated humbly and with care. Take house-made rigatoni served with plump, fried eggplant, nuggets of pan-tossed pork sausage and fragrant smoked mozzarella that adds panache; or seared WA barramundi with white beans, capers, parsley, lemon and extra virgin olive oil – understated in appearance but technically flawless.
Whether it’s a romantic dinner for two or boisterous catch-up with friends, Tartufo is a restaurant that can cover it all.
