This longstanding Richmond resident is sporting a freshly refurbished rooftop with a new menu of pub grub and sharing plates to match, writes Megan Miller.

Eats and beats go together like Hall and Oates, so it’s a win-win situation that one of the city’s landmark live music venues now has a buzzing new rooftop.

After four months of renovations, The Corner Hotel’s top level re-opened late last year with an expansive rooftop and a sprawling menu to match, served across several indoor and outdoor areas and private dining rooms.

The style is simple and bright with blond woods, polished concrete and hanging plants adding greenery.

Some of music’s biggest acts have graced the stage here since the 1940s. In more recent years the Corner has hosted the likes of Sia, The Presets, Lorde, The Living End and Crowded House.

Now, chef Shannon Rice leads the kitchen with some culinary hits as well, focusing on pub grub (burgers, parmas, fish and chips) alongside tasty snacks, dishes to share plus more refined plates.

Order and pay at the bar, take a number and the food will find you.

Croquettes

Thick-shelled croquettes filled with cod and capers sit well when washed down with any of the 29 beers on tap. Ditto calamari doused in semolina to swipe through a punchy salsa.

Pan-fried barramundi is perfectly cooked and perched atop a silky carrot veloute and fennel slices, with a scattering of broad beans for a rocking, surprisingly cheffy dish.

Or you can dig in with the smoked pork hock, which you shred at the table to make mini sliders with slaw, pickles and mayonnaise. It’s fun but lacking in flavour and it’s expensive for $45.

Other downsides? Food temperature was an issue, with almost all of our dishes landing on the table lukewarm, and an over-reliance on unexciting, store-bought mayonnaise.

That said, this roof rules, providing a top spot for a pre-gig or post-game bite. Fuel up and rock out.
