The Stuffed Beaver, Crows Nest review: dam good pub grub

The Stuffed Beaver, Crows Nest

Eager beavers are invited to check out new Canadian dive bar, The Stuffed Beaver, which has acquired new lodgings in Crows Nest.

The new venue marks Sydney’s second Stuffed Beaver, with the original outpost established in Bondi eight years ago.

Much like the original, The Stuffed Beaver 2.0 has the same beautifully battered look about it, with peeling paint, beer signs and preloved bric-a-brac forming the bar’s main decoration.

“In Bondi, we’ve got about eight years’ worth of community on the walls and we intend to do the same thing here, so we’ve left space on the shelves and behind the bar to let it develop organically,” group manager Johnny Elizondo said.

No doubt one of the most popular new features will be its purpose-built 120-inch television designed for sports fanatics to cheer, scream and throw peanuts at.

“We’ll be showing the NRL play offs, the super bowl, as well as all the regular NBA and UFC action,” Elizondo said. “Plus locals can request their favourite sporting matches too.”

For hungry beavers, there’s plenty to gnaw on, including Canadian classics such as poutine and Bloody Caesars, as well as “dam good” pub grub.

Burgers form a big part of the menu, with meaty offerings such as the John Candy Combo, made from Black Angus beef, fried jack cheese, bacon and jalapeños on a brioche-style bun.

“It may or may not have been the burger that killed him,” reads the description.

Add lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise and you end up with a “Make Americana Great Again” burger.

The menu also includes, frickles (deep fried pickles) hot wings, chilli dogs and onion rings, however you would be mad to miss the house specialty, the Canadian poutine, made from hot chips loaded with melted cheese and gravy.

Upgrade it to the Lumberjack and they’ll add crispy bits of bacon.

As for drinks, the beer list is tinny-heavy, with cheap cans by Coors, Tecate and Moon Dog as well as craft options by 4 Pines and Young Henrys.

They also serve their own Beaver Brew pale ale on tap, an easy-drinking Aussie-style ale, created specifically for the venue.

The selection of wines and cocktails are fairly limited, but they haven’t forgotten Canadian favourite, the Bloody Caesar. “It’s essentially a Bloody Mary, with clamato instead of tomato juice,” Elizondo said. “Clamato is a popular mixer made from clam broth, tomato, herbs and spices. It sounds fishy, but it doesn’t taste it at all.” Johnny’s recipe also includes a chilli-infused vodka, as well as Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, a dill pickle and celery.
