On the back of the black shirts worn by the waiters at this western suburbs institution it says, in small white letters, “Est 1984”.

It’s a cheeky nod to the guernseys of the Port Adelaide Football Club – this is Power heartland after all – but it also speaks volumes about Vietnam restaurant.

To be still operating, let alone filling the room, almost 40 years after opening is a rare feat in the world of hospitality, where restaurants seem to pop up and disappear almost overnight. But sit down to a big salty plate of crispy pork with ginger and chilli, or a fresh, bright bowl of chicken with basil and coconut and it’s easy to understand why Vietnam has stood the test of time.

The wood panelled walls adorned with favourable reviews and awards, along with the efficient but relaxed service, give Vietnam a homely feel. Indeed, you could be tucking in at your Vietnamese mate’s grandmother’s house. Beef with lemongrass and coconut is served in a rich, creamy sauce reminiscent of a Thai curry, while a generous serve of juicy South Australian prawns makes king prawns and broccoli a sensible investment.

The kids will love assembling their own cold rolls at the table, and with herbs so fresh they must have been picked that day, you’ll love eating them.
