Smaller bites and upcoming events

  • Salaryman in Sydney’s Surry Hills is launching a new relaxed Sunday brunch option this weekend. The menu includes DIY bao, sweet and savoury taiyaki (Japanese pastry) and breakfast martinis. What’s more, Salaryman’s Stephen Seckold is teaming up with Ross Magnayne from Melbourne’s Rice Paper Scissors on Monday, August 29, with a six-course “eat with your hands” experience. It’s being billed as “a dream for anyone who sucks at chopsticks”. Tickets are $45 per person (drinks not included).
  • Six of Melbourne’s South Wharf’s restaurants are holding the latest of their monthly “Progressive Dinners” on Thursday, September 22. The head chefs at Akachochin, Bohemian, BangPop, Common Man, Meat Market and Plus 5 have all designed a dish and guests will “progress” from restaurant to restaurant to experience the resulting five-course degustation. Tickets are $119 per person and include matching champagne, wine and sake. Additionally, Akachochin is hosting a wine dinner on September 7 and Bohemian is holding paella cooking classes on September 10, October 8 and November 5. Bookings can be made through the website.
  • 4 Pines Brewing Company is expanding its Northern Beaches footprint with the roll-out of three new venues over the next year. Joining the original Manly BrewPub and Brookvale Brewery Truck Bar, which launched last year, will be a barrel-aged beer concept in Newport, a beer and bread hospitality hub in Belrose and a new eatery underneath the BrewPub in Manly. We plan on keeping a close eye on each.
  • The InterContinental Sydney Double Bay has partnered with Max Brenner to create an exclusive chocolate high tea experience that’s available every weekend from now until the end of September. Just look at the three-tiered stand of chocolate! Look at it! Tickets are $59 per adult and $27 per child and seatings are scheduled at either 12:00pm and 2:30pm. Book by calling (02) 8388 8388 or emailing stillery.doublebay@ihg.com.

What we’ve been eating

  • “I had six courses of pork at Nel Restaurant with Nelly Robinson and Colin Fassnidge cooking, including a pig’s blood dessert, which was surprising lovely with the more familiar combo of chocolate and raspberries.” – Kerrie McCallum, Editor-in-Chief
  • “I had the most elegant moussaka at Beta, the new bar above Greek restaurant Alpha in the CBD. A fat disc of smokey, silky aubergine topped with a creamy crown of baked yoghurt, feta and saffron. Comfort food all dressed up.” – Shannon Harley
  • “I went and had a squiz at Tequila Mockingbird in Paddington. I used to work with one of the chefs, Matt Taylor-Watkins, when he was at Monopole, but here he’s teamed up with Regan Porteous and Gabriel Valenti to mix contemporary-style food with Latin American influence. It’s early days, but dishes like brocollini mole with cured egg yolk or grilled calamari with ajo blanco and roasted pepper sauce are encouraging and something a bit different for Sydney. Worth going for their tequila heavy cocktail list too! I also had the bar menu at Momofuku Seibo. Jerked pork chop! Roti! Fried chicken wings! Pretty cool that you can walk into a booked out restaurant on a Saturday night and grab a seat at their bar. Even cooler that it’s so good with a mix between bites (chicken skin crisps sandwiching crab meat), big mains (that sticky pork chop served with charred lime) and salad (Waldorf with blue cheese showered over the top). I’d go again. ” – David Matthews, Senior Subeditor
  • “I had a beautiful dish at Hotel Centennial on Tuesday night. Blue-eye trevalla on a bed of black garlic risoni with a black truffle sauce. Best dish I’ve had there.” – Kirsten Jenkins, Style Editor
