delicious. reveals: our tried-and-true hangover cures

Hangover

Party season is approaching, and with it comes the inevitable celebratory hangover.

Why are hangovers so much worse during the festive period? We think it’s a combination of the summer heat, mixed drinks (spiked eggnog, anyone?) and reliance on nibbles as a main meal (those party pies were never going to cut it). Here is how the delicious. team tames their next-day nightmare.

Lauren Sams, digital editor: I love a Frosty Fruit when I’m hungover! Sweet, cold and hydrating (sort of).

Samantha Coutts, food assistant: Ham and cheese croissant made with Taleggio cheese, prosciutto and topped with a fried egg. And a tall, strong coffee.

Shannon Harley, managing editor: Ice cold coconut water and an acai bowl. I owe my life to that combination. RIP hangover.

Heidi Finnane, chief subeditor/features writer: Two Hydralytes dropped into a days-old cup of water sitting next to the bed. Skoll. Sleep again if feeling sick, otherwise if okay get dressed immediately and get out of the house as fast as I can in search of food: bacon and egg roll, coffee, burger, chips, chips, chips and more chips. I just need to get anything into me FAST (the window of opportunity can be very small). Then shame a friend into going for a schooner… Vicious cycle, really.

David Matthews, senior subeditor: A good old Berocca, sparkling water and a good burger from the Fish Shop in Potts Point. Or generally a good fry-up, either at home or somewhere brunchable around Redfern. Bacon and orange juice are always a must. Grease soaks it all up, right? And the juice makes you feel kind of healthy.

Phoebe Wood, senior food editor: After wallowing in self-pity for several hours I will succumb to a few Don Drapers in mineral water, followed by a green juice that’s half-full of lemon juice, then progress to a vodka, lime and soda with some kind of huge burger. And chips.

Jacqui Triggs, creative director: Duck pancake washed down with a can of Fanta.

John Hannan, digital producer: Two Advil, an antihistamine, deep-fried chicken and hot chips that have been smothered in extra chicken seasoning. Embarrassing but works a treat every time. A cold Coke Zero also helps.

Sharnee Rawson, online news editor: The old-school Vegemite on toast, preferably on sourdough with loads of butter. If that doesn’t sort me out enough to leave the house, I spike baked beans with hot sauce and chorizo and make a side serve of scrambled eggs. And coffee, obvs.

Kerrie McCallum, editor-in-chief: Eggs, bacon and coconut water!

Caitlin Griffith-Pecset, editorial coordinator: East L.A. Fries from Lord of the Fries. Cheesy, spicy, Jalapeno-bathed goodness. Or Kraft Mac’n’Cheese, because it lets you cook comfort food without putting anymore stress on those remaining brain cells.

Josie Taylor, senior designer: If I am hungover the best thing to rescue me is a Bloody Mary (and a side of fries). They are the perfect savoury drink/hangover cure and haven’t failed me yet. The spicier, the better.
