Betting on the Queen's hat at Royal Ascot

Home and Away's Tessa James revels in the sights, sounds, fashions and tastes of the world-famous race meeting in this exclusive travel diary for delicious.

Rail, hail or shine, I was set to have an incredible day at Royal Ascot!

We started the day with hair and make-up, followed by a big breakfast and then departed the Four Seasons in Hampshire to Ascot which is about a one hour drive.

At Royal Ascot the atmosphere was incredible – from the fashion to the food and then, of course, to the racing!

Longines invited us to sit for lunch prior to the official races commencing. We had salmon carpaccio for a starter, sea bass for lunch and then an array of cheese and crackers, followed by a traditional British high tea. There was even a tea expert in the Longines hospitality suite who matched our drinks and tea to food. Very British.

While walking through the Royal Enclosure I saw the biggest hat I have ever seen, worn by designer Isabell Kristensen. it was incredible! Floral embellishments on hats actually seemed to be a big trend at Royal Ascot this year.

It is a tradition at Ascot to bet on the colour of Queen Elizabeth’s hat, so prior to the royal procession where the Queen (and other royals including Price Charles and Prince Harry) ride around the parade ring, I placed a bet on the colour peach – however, she wore yellow.

I noticed that the racing fashion was much more traditional than at race meets in Australia. There are a lot of guidelines when it comes to the dress code at Royal Ascot, which I love and fully embrace. Women’s fashion choices were elegant and colourful, while the men looked handsome and traditional.

I felt so honoured to be wearing Australian fashion royalty: my dress was by ELLERY and my hat by Nerida Winter. I loved my outfit so much. It was so appropriate yet fashion forward and definitely perfect for the British weather.

It was a really special experience seeing Queen Elizabeth. I would have to say it was my favourite part. A once in a lifetime experience!
