Follow the scent of brill cream to the Beer Bar, as it’s affectionately known among locals who appreciate a unique brew and more often than not, a well-groomed beard.
While the hipster factor is above average, there are also plenty of run-of-the-mill ladies and gentlemen aged 25 to 60 who frequent Saint John in the heart of Launceston. Craft, boutique, artisan, made with the help of the family dog, beer is what owners Tim, Ryan and their band of flannel-shirted men are on a mission to share with a city long betrothed to Boags.
Plastered into on-trend subway tiles in the main bar are taps leading to six constantly changing kegs. A stack of beer and cider lines another wall, from which you can make up a mix bag to takeaway.
If your tonic’s a little fresher, above these is an astonishing range of gin from around the world. The choice of wine is brief and includes a decent pinot and real-deal prosecco plus cider on tap.
There’s more beer out the back, in a big room only open when it’s bumper to bumper or for functions. A food van called Eats with Beats serving the most exquisite double burgers is parked within stumbling distance out the back.
A couple of worn couches offer some textural relief but the bar is dark, heavied with timber and dotted with promo posters. Despite its simplistic grunge, the place invites you in and tempts you to stay: a welcome much to do with the genuine blokes behind the bar who want to teach you about good booze.
