Take a break from the sand next time you’re down the Coast and grab a coffee and croissant at this little slice of Paris, says Wendy Hughes.
Not all the top food destinations of our gilded coastline are by the ocean. Bam Bam Bakehouse, for one, is in a sleepy backstreet and opens onto a tree- studded park, making it a convenient choice for those with littlies.
The venture, sibling to the beloved Paddock Bakery, is a crowd-pleaser. The team will even deliver your avo toast and matcha latte to the park if you prefer to feast on a patch of grass.
Equal parts patisserie and bistro, the restaurant is staffed by artisan bakers who turn out exquisite pastries and a steady flow of croissants timed for maximum freshness through the day. The extensive breakfast menu covers the gamut from dainty offerings, such as a warm croissant with house preserve – and can we just report that the croissants, prepared over two days, are impossibly flaky – to heartier options that are Flintstonian in size.
Famished surfers will appreciate the “Bam Bam Biggie”, a wagyu beef patty with the works on a woodfired roll. Egg nasi, meanwhile, adds piquancy to the breakfast line-up, with wok-sauteed rice, egg, vegetables and chilli sambal.
The aforementioned avocado on chargrilled sourdough is elevated with the addition of fresh coriander, preserved lemon, chilli flakes, smoked salt and olive oil. There are ample extras available, too, including moreish sweet potato fries, prawn skewers and haloumi cubes, so that diners can customise their meal.
But by all means, leave room for the sublime sweets, all of which are made in-house. My favourites include the decadently sticky ka’z, a sort of caramel- infused croissant, or the strawberry tart, a textbook combination of fresh berries, vanilla mousseline and delicate Breton shortcrust shells.
The coffee, from Sydney’s Single Origin Roasters, is bang-on, too, and there’s a single origin on rotation each week.
