47. 2KW Bar and Restaurant, Adelaide

Given our sunny Mediterranean climate, it’s surprising Adelaide doesn’t have more rooftop restaurants.

This one, settled atop a landmark bank building on the corner of North Terrace and King William St is a cracker, with views across the city and into the gardens of Government House. The expansive outdoor area houses sofas and bar stools cuffed by greenery, even private cabanas if you’re feeling a bit Vegas.

Folding windows link this terrace to the handsome restaurant that is dominated by a long marble bar, while in the kitchen the redwood-fired Josper grill takes centre stage, setting the agenda for flamelicked menus, designed for sharing.

Charred Spencer Gulf calamari is tossed with spicy nduja, sweet orange and bitter witlof. Fried bread is smeared with mushroom jam, then topped with pieces of rare sirloin and crispy enoki (try stopping at one). Shio koji chicken in a light tonkotsu broth is generous, easily serving four – especially if you order a side of the wicked, triple cooked salt and vinegar potatoes.

Service is excellent and the wine list superb featuring a couple of French drops that might require a quick re-mortgaging of the family home. Come for a cocktail on the terrace or a leisurely lunch or dinner. Either way that lovely view never gets tired.
