Gone are the days of limited options for a special meal out in Newtown – many noteworthy restaurants have popped up in the past few years, despite the pandemic and its best efforts to halt the arrival and survival of anything new.
Cafe Paci, with its warm, vibey dining room, has stood strong during the pandemic. Ordering wisely is a must here: the food is rich, and if you want to try one of everything you may indeed roll out through the front door at the end.
Allow the fantastic wait staff to guide you (and rein you in as needed), and if you’re blown away by the wine suggestions they’ll direct you to a website where you might be able to find the very same drop. There’s a beautifully balanced dish of tart fermented carrots with spicy ‘nduja on crisp rye with a scattering of dill fronds as a first act, followed by a charred roast half chicken in a rich jus accompanied by a juicy lemon cheek. A simple salad of lightly dressed butter lettuce leaves helps to offset the indulgence of that succulent chook.
The strawberry granita with sorrel sorbet is the ideal finale to a truly delicious meal.
