Two huge paella pans filled with the festive colours of the famous Spanish rice dish greet guests as they walk into Comida, offering much promise for the meal that’s about to come.

This is a place that immediately welcomes all types – from sophisticated couples lingering over a long lunch, to on-the-go families whose children will happily munch from their very own menu before playing in the big garden out the back.

That garden provides more than just a space for kids to run around. Its fruit trees and vegetable patches offer produce that’s snapped up by the kitchen, used to create an ever-changing menu that ebbs and flows with what’s in season.

At this visit, it’s chargrilled broccoli lying in a pool of ajo blanco (a kind of white gazpacho) and livened up with crunchy sourdough, currants, crushed almonds, pepitas, sunflower seeds and a little pickled garlic. It’s a party in your mouth. Or perhaps try thin slices of the house-smoked pork jowl, with hidden kimchi and garden-grown herbs that offer much-needed freshness.

And you can’t go past that paella you passed on entry, the chicken version filled with colourful vegies from the garden and rice cooked so perfectly you’ll find yourselves fighting over every last crispy-edge piece on the plate. Pick from a wine list that favours Adelaide Hills locals as well as the odd Spanish drop.
