What a dilemma! Delicatessen has too many amazing French desserts – from an oozy chocolate fondant, to a nougat parfait or the special apple tarte tatin – to possibly choose just one.
Take a step into Delicatessen and you’ll be whisked a world away from the busy-ness of the CBD’s Waymouth St. That’s meant in a literal sense – you could easily be in a hole-in-the-wall bistro down some alleyway in Paris once you take in the rustic-chic decor, lowlight ambience, short but carefully selected wine list and charming waiters.
Back to the ordering dilemma. When every dish is presented at such a consistent standard, there are no lowlights. Take entree for example. Who can go past the chive and raclette croquettes, the crisp outer shell giving way to a creamy bechamel surprise? Or the delicate pastry holding a shallot and goats cheese tart?
For mains, a filet mignon special is hard to miss, the bacon shell adding a smoky flavour to the medium rare steak it encases. Or the crispy-skinned salmon with a smear of hollandaise sauce. And now the final dilemma – dessert. It’s hard to go past a textbook creme brulee, its toffee top resisting a strong tap-tap before revealing a perfectly set, delicate custard. C’est parfait!
