Redheads may be a dying breed but one bluey is booming in South Hobart.
The place is unpolished: melamine tables, heavy pine, retro mirrors, scarlet walls and beer mugs.
But what Ginger may lack in refinery, it makes up for with its food.
Most would be content with the specials board but joining this are pages of satisfying tucker such as house-baked crumpets, welsh rarebit, kimchi pancake, lamb backstrap salad and fancy sandwiches.
After the affable waiter gives me his honest pros and cons of a couple of dishes, I choose seared tuna salad with grapefruit, wasabi goats curd and rice noodles. It arrives momentarily and carrying on the Ginger style, is fresh and fuss-free.
It’s tricky getting a table here of a weekend as Ginger is one of the very few places in Hobart you’re able to book for breakfast. But if it’s just the two of you, there’s usually space on a couch or at stools in the window, where you’ll drink in Mount Wellington as well as your deliciously prepared latte and complimentary jaffa.
