11. The Little Rickshaw, Aldinga

If 'shanty chic' was a thing, this would be it: a former blacksmith’s workshop-turned diner, with a welcoming mix of corrugated iron, exposed stone and timber beams, rugs underfoot and hanging bulbs overhead.

Indie tunes by The Beautiful Girls help set the mood, reminding us we’re coastside and it’s time to chill out, man. The food fits this mantra. What started as a weekend market operation is now a considered procession of exceptional Southeast Asian bites and share-style dishes.

The Feed Me option is a good way to go. It might start with a tartare of whiting caught in local waters yesterday, barely bound by kelp oil, ponzu and fresh wasabi sitting atop a tiny piece of rice paper. A perfectly pleated pork and shiitake mushroom dumpling, in a puddle of black vinegar dashi sauce, is the stuff of dumpling dreams.

Heartier highlights include hand-pulled noodles dressed in a lip-smacking garlic chilli oil and fall-off-the-bone wagyu rib with a sticky chilli infused honey. Desserts are ever-changing but for something to write home about, ask for the physics-defying, tempura fried milk custard with Davidson plum-spiked umezu and shizo syrup. It’ll put a smile on your face.

TLR is now a not-so-hidden gem in Aldinga, so be sure to book ahead.
