Man-about-town Scott Pickett saved Melbourne institution Longrain from the brink of collapse when he bought the city’s favourite Thai restaurant two years ago.

Ever since, lunches and dinners feel more like a house-warming party for the 15-years-young venue. Group-friendly, round and rectangular tables fill the green-hued space, livened by a vibrant tiger mural.

If you’re not opting for the festive banquet menu, energised wait staff will recommend the betel leaves – prawn or pomelo – to start, with both bites packing salty-spicy and sweet-sour punches. The filled egg net is also a flavour explosion, which perfectly balances spanner crab, caramelised coconut, bean shoots and peanuts before gift wrapping it all in a cooked egg crosshatch.

Longrain’s larger dishes include the wickedly crisp whole fish and the jungle curry, topped with wagyu scotch fillet straight off Pickett’s signature grill. The yellow turmeric curry is steeped in tradition, with the lamb braised overnight in a fragrant curry paste and rich coconut cream.

Cocktails are tropical island-inspired both downstairs at Longrain and upstairs at bar Longsong, with concoctions like Shiso Fine – part gin and coconut water – guaranteed to get any party started.
