The fast-food giants have experienced polar opposite reactions to their latest marketplace moves.
Earth-shattering news on the fried chicken front: KFC has introduced a limited edition pulled pork burger – and the faithful are having none of it.
The Kentucky Pulled Pork Burger, which contains pulled pork, coleslaw and barbecue sauce on a brioche bun, will be available at KFC restaurants for the next four weeks.
Fans immediately took to the Internet to register their anti-pork disgust.
“What the f— pork at KFC?” wrote one person on the fast-food giant’s Instagram page. “WHAT THE HECK KFC” and “wtf is this??” wrote others.
One Facebook commenter captured the mood of anger, despondency and borderline illiteracy when he wrote on behalf of the disgruntled legions: “All I have to say I’m done with you KFC. Since when pork is chicken? This has put me in a situation that I won’t go to kfc anymore if u are going to sell pork at your store…”
Another sadly stated the obvious: “that’s not chicken”. You can’t argue with that.
The pulled pork burger – KFC’s second foray into alt-burgers this year, following the release of its Black Zinger Burger in March – costs $5.95 or $7.95 as part of a combo meal and is available from June 14 until July 11.
In other burger news, American chain Carl’s Jr. opened its first Queensland store this week, at Brisbane’s domestic airport, where it is doubtless hoping to replicate its success south of the border.
When Carl’s Jr. opened in Sydney’s Bateau Bay in February people queued around the block to see what all the fuss was about. (People in Sydney love queuing for burgers.)
“For us Queensland has always been a primary market that we wanted to move in to,” the company’s Ned Lyerly said.
“It’s a dynamic market, an exciting market, but more importantly, it shares some of the same Californian lifestyle (characteristics) that our brand has enjoyed and grown up with over the past 75 years.”
The airport operation is part of a planned 300-store expansion across the country over the next 10 years.
