A cafe in Brisbane’s south offers eggs Benedict with a difference and swift service with a smile.

There’s the version that comes on a croffle (croissant waffle), or with a side of fried chicken, another with hollandaise spiked with Sriracha, or perhaps yuzu instead. It seems every cafe in town has a twist on the classic eggs Benedict.

Charming neighbourhood eatery M.Y. Roasting Cafe in Yeronga, in Brisbane’s southwest, is no different. The family-owned business, which has recently undergone a renovation, introducing a window servery, new furniture, brighter country colour palette and cosy banquette seating, serves both a traditional option ($17.50), as well as its “Chef’s Benedict” ($21). The latter is a tweaked incarnation featuring a doughy bagel spread with mashed avocado, before a layer of wilted bitter rainbow chard, a fold of mortadella, two runny-centred poached eggs, a drizzling of herb-tinted hollandaise, and a flourish of pistachio dukkha.

The result almost miraculously tastes healthy – hard to believe given the butter-laden sauce and fatty Italian meat. Perhaps it’s the soft, shimmering greens or maybe the avocado – said to be the world’s most nutritious fruit with 25 essential nutrients. Whatever it is, this chef’s version boasts all the flavour and is deceptive enough to eliminate the guilt.

There are plenty of items on the relaxed cafe’s all-day menu that are actually healthy for you though, if that’s what you crave. Think acai bowls, a veg and fruit-loaded autumn salad, fish tacos and vegetable fritters ($17.50). Packed with grated carrot, zucchini and corn, they’re cooked in the pan until their “exterior goes tan and crisp, leaving the centre soft, with each mouthful ready to be piled high with accompanying diced avocado and a swoosh through the piped dollops of beetroot hummus.

If calories are no concern, however, look to the Queensland burger stacked with the works including pineapple and bacon; or the rhubarb waffle crepes with rhubarb ice cream and coconut crumble.

But what really has customers queuing on the footpath between tables full of diners are the drinks. Cyclists, couples, friends and singles form an endless line at the street-facing takeaway window ordering creamy coffee on Bear Bones beans as well as frappes, cold brew, smoothies and juices, such as our palate- cleansing cucumber and apple-forward “Super Green” juice ($8). And what, no doubt, keeps them returning is their quick service, with orders delivered swiftly and with a smile.

The mission statement on M.Y. Roasting Cafe’s website is “to form a community in the heart of Yeronga”, and they definitely seem to be doing that.
