If you like to stay a step ahead, here’s a taste of things to come

The worlds of food, coffee, fashion, decor and beauty are constantly evolving thanks to imaginative chefs, designers and creators. In this video, two tastemakers predict the biggest trends for 2022.

If anyone has a finger on the pulse when it comes to food and dining trends, it’s Sammy Smith, co-owner and chef at Porch and Parlour – one of Bondi’s most popular cafes. According to Smith, food trends come and go, but provenance continues to be a priority. “Chefs want to know more about where every ingredient comes from, and so do our customers,” Smith says. “To maximise quality and freshness while reducing our carbon footprint, we’re tending to choose ingredients that are sustainably produced and as local as possible. We’re steering away from processed foods and leaning even more towards natural foods.”

“People are spending more time in their homes and giving themselves special treats. They’re enjoying the ritual of making cafe-style coffees more often – lattes, cappuccinos and piccolos. I’ve also noticed that they’re drinking to appreciate the flavour of the coffee on its own – more cold brews, long blacks and pour-overs in carafes. That’s definitely a trend to watch in 2022.”

As founder and editor-in-chief of Gritty Pretty, Australia’s first interactive online magazine dedicated to beauty, Eleanor Pendleton has become one of the country’s most respected style icons. Naturally, she has some very insightful views on upcoming trends. “After the events of the past year, we’re being bolder with colour,” Pendleton says. “It’s similar to the post-war 1920s when there was this glorious explosion of art and culture and colour. We’re also shopping more mindfully and with a conscience. Whether it’s a piece for the home, some fresh produce, a jacket or pair of shoes, even a face cream, people want to know what’s in it, who made it and where it’s from.”

“Carafe pour-over style coffee has really taken off in a lot of the cafes I go to. It’s perfect for sharing and entertaining and a lovely way to present coffee at home with your friends. And it’s so easy to prepare with a Nespresso Vertuo Next machine. Coffee drinkers are also becoming far more concerned about sustainability and ethical trade. That trend is here to stay.”
