This exclusive steak tasting dinner is a rare treat for meat eaters

Rockpool Bar & Grill

Get your serrated knives ready.

Appreciate a great steak? Rockpool Bar & Grill in Melbourne is offering meat eaters a rare opportunity to try some of the best cuts in the country, all in one sitting.

And we’re not talking about any old Angus either. The Rare Breed Steak Tasting Dinner will be an exclusive steak showcase, featuring five different cuts from three rare breeds, supplied by legendary Australian wagyu farmer David Blackmore.

“Not many people in the world have tried these steaks. We are very fortunate to have access,” says Corey Costelloe, Executive Chef at Rockpool Bar & Grill.

Diners will get the chance to try pureblood Mishima, the original Japanese wagyu breed. “It’s the wagyu that predates wagyu, before it was crossbred with the English breed to make what we now know as wagyu,” Costelloe explains.

Blackmore is the only producer of Mishima wagyu in the world outside of its island home off the coast of Japan.

Also on the menu will be Rubia Gallega, a rare heritage breed from the Galicia region of Spain, and Rohne, a composite breed of top secret genetic make-up that has a marble score of 9+.

“Rubia Gallega is very tender for its size and eats so differently to the meat that we have in Australia. You’ll only find it at some of the best restaurants in Spain. Not many people in the world have tried it.”

None of the steaks are available to buy through the usual channels and have been set aside specially for the event.

“Even at Rockpool we might have one of these steaks on the menu, but we would never have all five.”

Diners will learn about the provenance of the breed as it’s served at the table. If you have any questions, you’ll be able to grill the chef.

It’s a unique opportunity to compare steaks side-by-side, Costelloe says. “When you have a series of steaks that are cooked the same way, at the same temperature, Rare Breed Steak Tasting Dinner for the same amount of time, it makes it possible to compare them. You can start to say, I like the texture of this one, but the flavour of that one. You end up learning a lot about your own preferences.”

The dinner is recommended for people who are interested in expanding their knowledge on steak, including the best ways to cook and eat it.

“Plus, there’s the bragging rights. You’ll be able to say you’ve eaten five of the rarest steaks in the world in one sitting.”

Rest assured, diners will be given five tasting-sized portions – but they do add up, says Costelloe. “It ends up being around 300g-350g of red meat with no bone, which is the equivalent of one big steak.” And that’s just part of the menu. The dinner also includes a cocktail and canape on arrival as well as an assortment of salads and sides, with Rockpool’s famous pavlova for dessert.
